A. The Path of the Exodus

1. Shmot Chapter 13

17 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not by the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said: 'Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt.'

18 But God led the people about, by the way of the wilderness by the Red Sea; and the children of Israel went up armed out of the land of Egypt.

2. Rashi Shmot 13:17

17) Because it was near – And easy to return by the same path to Egypt. And there are many midrashim.

When they see war – like the war of, “and the Amaleki and Caanani descended, etc.” If they took a direct path they would have come back. After they took an indirect route they said, “let us appoint a new head and return to Egypt”. If they had taken a simple route, how much more so?

Lest they repent – they will rethink leaving, and set their hearts to return.

3. Ramban Shmot 13:17

Although it was near – Rashi and Ibn Ezra both maintain that the reason that God did not choose the Philistine path was since it was near, and [Israel] would have immediately returned to Egypt.

In my opinion, if that were so, then “for God said” is written too early. [According to them] it should have read, “… God led them not by the way of the land of the Philistines, for God said: 'The way is close and they may decide to return [if they see war]”.

Rather it is correct to say that God did not lead them along the Philistine path although it was near and good to go that way, because God said lest the nation change its mind when they see war and return to Egypt. The reason for the war would be that if they would pass the Philistine way, the Philistines would not allow them to pass in peace, and they would return to Egypt. However, along the desert path they would not see war until they came to the land of Sichon and Og the Amorite kings, which was far from Egypt. The war with Amalek in Rephidim was not worth returning over, because [the Amalekites] would not have let them. These people came from their homeland to fight out of their hatred, so even if [Israel] retreated to Egypt it would not have worked. They would have pursued them along the way. Besides, they were far from Egypt at that point, and the return route was circuitous, and nobody knew another way.

4. Yishayahu Chapter 31

1 Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help, and rely on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many, and in horsemen, because they are exceeding mighty; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!

2 Yet He also is wise, and bringeth evil, and doth not call back His words; but will arise against the house of the evil-doers, and against the help of them that work iniquity.

3 Now the Egyptians are men, and not God, and their horses flesh, and not spirit; so when the LORD shall stretch out His hand, both he that helpeth shall stumble, and he that is helped shall fall, and they all shall perish together. {S}

ג  וּמִצְרַיִם אָדָם וְלֹא-אֵל, וְסוּסֵיהֶם בָּשָׂר וְלֹא-רוּחַ; וַידוד יַטֶּה יָדוֹ, וְכָשַׁל עוֹזֵר וְנָפַל עָזֻר--וְיַחְדָּו, כֻּלָּם יִכְלָיוּן.  {ס}

5. Yishayahu Chapter 30

1 Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of Me; and that form projects, but not of My spirit, that they may add sin to sin;

2 That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at My mouth; to take refuge in the stronghold of Pharaoh, and to take shelter in the shadow of Egypt!

6. Hoshea Chapter 7

11 And Ephraim is become like a silly dove, without understanding; they call unto Egypt, they go to Assyria.

7. Devarim Chapter 17

14 When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein; and shalt say: 'I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are round about me';

15 thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose; one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee; thou mayest not put a foreigner over thee, who is not thy brother.

16 Only he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses; forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you: 'Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.'

8. Devarim 28

68 And the LORD shall bring thee back into Egypt in ships, by the way whereof I said unto thee: 'Thou shalt see it no more again'; and there ye shall sell yourselves unto your enemies for bondmen and for bondwoman, and no man shall buy you.

10. Bamidbar  Chapter 22

2 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

3 And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many; and Moab was overcome with dread because of the children of Israel.

5 And he sent messengers unto Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the River, to the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying: 'Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt; behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me.

6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me; peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.'

7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spoke unto him the words of Balak.

8 And he said unto them: 'Lodge here this night, and I will bring you back word, as the LORD may speak unto me'; and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.

9 And God came unto Balaam, and said: 'What men are these with thee?'

10 And Balaam said unto God: 'Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me [saying]:

11 Behold the people that is come out of Egypt, it covereth the face of the earth; now, come curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out.'

12 And God said unto Balaam: 'Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people; for they are blessed.'

13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak: 'Get you into your land; for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you.'

14 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said: 'Balaam refuseth to come with us.'

15 And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they.

16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him: 'Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor: Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me;

17 for I will promote thee unto very great honor, and whatsoever thou sayest unto me I will do; come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.'

18 And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak: 'If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do any thing, small or great.

19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will speak unto me more.'

20 And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him: 'If the men are come to call thee, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak unto thee, that shalt thou do.'

11. Bamidbar Chapter 24

1 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he went not, as at the other times, to meet with enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.

12. Yehoshua Chapter 13

21 and all the cities of the table-land, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the chiefs of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon, that dwelt in the land.

22 Also Balaam the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among the rest of their slain.

13. De’ir Alla Inscription

De’ir ‘Alla Inscription: Scroll of [Ba]laam [son of Beo]r, the man seeing the gods; behold, the gods came to him at night, and [spoke to] him according to these words, and they said to [Balaa]m son of Beor thus: “The last flame has appeared; a fire for judgment has appeared.” And Balaam arose in the morning, days, [...] [ ], and cou[ld not eat], and he wept abundantly.  And his people came up to him and they [said] to Balaam son of Beor:  “Why are you fasting and why are you weeping?”  And he said to them: “Sit! I'll show you what the Sh[addayin] are [. . . . . . . . . . . . .], and come, consider the doings of the gods.” The gods have gathered together, and the Shaddayin have held an assembly, and they have said to Sh[ama]sh: ‘Sew up, close the sky with your cloud! [Let] darkness be there, and not brightness, shadow and not radiance; For you'll strike terror [with the cl]oud of darkness, and do not make noise ever but [instead??] the passer, b- -at, eagle, and peli[can], vultures, ostrich, st[ork], young of falcons, owl, chicks of heron, dove, bird-of-prey, pigeon and sparrow. [every bird of the s]kies ... [on earth?] below where the stick led the ewes, hares have eaten [tog]ether [fr]eely….’”
